Initiation and propagation laws of the glass cracks in specimens subjected to normal loading under the action

WAN Zhen-ping, LIU Ya-jun, TANG Yong, YE Bang-yan

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2006, Volume 1, Issue 2,   Pages 194-198 doi: 10.1007/s11465-005-0011-x

Abstract: With more and more applications of glass in advanced fields of science, the demand for glass machining precision has increased greatly. More and more attention is being paid to glass cutting because precise glass parts with various shapes can be obtained at high efficiency and low cost. To improve the machining precision of part surfaces and to facilitate tool design and cutting parameter selection, the initiation and propagation laws of glass cracks in specimens subjected to normal loading by symmetric wedges were investigated. Research results show that initiation and propagation laws are the same with interior symmetric wedge angles of 30o-120o, while the laws are different with interior symmetric wedge angles equal to or more than "e150o. The relationship between medial crack length and normal loading was also investigated when specimens were indented by symmetrical wedges with interior angles of 30o-120o.

Technological lubricating means: Evolution of materials and ideas

Vladimir A. GODLEVSKIY

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2016, Volume 11, Issue 1,   Pages 101-107 doi: 10.1007/s11465-016-0369-y

Abstract:

The main stages of technological lubricating material development from ancient times to date are described. How the chemical composition of these products changed with time, how new ideas revealing the physical and chemical basics of external media that influence the mechanical processing of materials appeared, how these ideas explained the differences between traditional tribology and specific technology of metal processing are discussed. The question of the possible realization of Rehbinder’s adsorption effect in contact zone is also stated. The description of a very captivating problem is related to the explanation of the mechanism of lubricant penetration into the contact zone between the material being processed and the tool. The birth and development of the hypothesis of microcapillary penetration of the lubricant into the dynamically changed intersurface clearance that has finally led to formulating the “necessary kinetic condition of the lubricating activity” is relayed.

Comprehensive analysis on China’s National Climate Change Assessment Reports: Action and emphasis

Bing WANG, Ge HONG, Chao-Qun CUI, Hao YU, Tad MURTY

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2019, Volume 6, Issue 1,   Pages 52-61 doi: 10.1007/s42524-019-0002-y

Abstract: Climate change assessment is central for low-carbon management practice. This paper investigates China’s National Climate Change Assessment Reports of 2007, 2011, and 2015. These three reports are compared with other climate change assessment reports by data mining. The necessity of national climate change assessment is analyzed with the requirements at home and abroad. The latest progress surrounding climate change impacts, adaptation, and mitigation is outlined with the increasing temperature rise in China and the urgency of climate change commitments. The achievements in climate change assessment indicate the increasing climate change vulnerability on sectors and regions in China and the strategies and priorities for low-carbon actions. Distinct gaps and differences are identified in the coverage of industry, regions, and vulnerability assessment between our assessments and other evaluation reports. These gaps and differences demonstrate the importance and future improvements of China’s national climate change assessment in international climate governance. The outlook for China’s fourth assessment report is proposed.
